Simpson Desert - 50 Years On

Quick Overview

In 1962, Reg Sprigg lead an exploration party across the Simpson Desert. This trip became the first motorised crossing of the desert.

It was this feat of endurance and navigational skills that inspired adventurer and tour guide, Vic Widman, to lead a group on the first crossing of the desert in 2012. The Simpson Desert is closed from December 1 until March 15 due to the extreme weather conditions during that time of the year.

Fifty years after the first motorised crossing, the adventures of Vic's group were quite different to those of the exploration party, but no less challenging.

The trip begins at Port Augusta and includes Marree, William Creek, Oodnadatta and Mt Dare, before heading into the desert. Dalhousie Springs, Purni Bore and Big Red are also highlights before the journey finished at Birdsville.

Due to heavy rain in late February, there were also water and mud to challenge the convoy as well as sand and salt lakes.

This presentation is approx 100 minutes.
