At the end of World War II, the British government identified the need to close a gap in their defence capabilities. In collaboration with the Australian government, they began the search for a suitable rocket testing range in Australia. Len Beadell was appointed to find a suitable site, which he did at Woomera. Also required was a site for atomic testing and a network of roads through the areas over which the rockets would be fired. Len Beadell is known as Australia’s last great explorer. From Woomera to Maralinga and as far away as the 80 mile beach, Len explored and surveyed and the Gunbarrel Road Construction Party built a network of roads and opened up Central Australia for the travellers that followed. This video traces the journey of 2 different convoys as they travel the roads of Len Beadell. Part 1 includes the Gunbarrel Highway to Everard Junction, Gary Highway, Gary Junction Road and the Sandy Blight Junction Road. In Part 2 the journey covers the Anne Beadell Highway from Coober Pedy to Laverton and the Connie Sue Highway to Rawlinna and concludes at Woomera, where it all began.
